But then he is prone to making comparisons of movements and people without respect to their actual alignment in history. In his book called Hindutva, he collapses all the complex social-historical dynamics of the hindu nationalist movement in India today to a sampradaya or guru lineage, that stretches to include the Cosmopolitan figures of Sri Aurobindo and Vivekananda, who wrote discourses on human history laden with enlightenment secular value systems, which were seen as progressive. Similarly as he collapses enlightenment figures with hindu zealots he does the same in collapsing Carl Schmidt's Nazis who marched millions into the gas chambers with Roy who is speaking for small groups Naxalites who otherwise, have suffered the injustices of caste and poverty for generations and who will most likely be exterminated or displaced by the Commercial Mining & Manufacturing power of Corporate State within a score or so. Your rhetoric does not match the facts on the ground

Mixed metaphors again Mr. Sharma!richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07481698938935691449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13437119.post-25336346100233588772010-11-08T21:03:51.937+05:302010-11-08T21:03:51.937+05:30You've done a fantastic job of articulating co...You've done a fantastic job of articulating concerns I share about the hijacking of useful political debate by 'celebrities'.

While Bob Dylan's 1975 song "The Hurricane" sounded wonderfully anti-establishment and anti-racist, Rubin Carter, the subject of the song, continued to languish in prison for another 10 years - years that Dylan spent writing songs, going on tour and in general, carrying on.

Personally, I'd much rather see a cause advocated by people that know the issue and are committed to it, however obscure they may be.macnifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13669074217923324437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13437119.post-47206287824932999032010-06-05T22:05:40.416+05:302010-06-05T22:05:40.416+05:30"She suffers from no degree of doubt, has lit..."She suffers from no degree of doubt, has little sense of irony and no humour."

Really? :D

N. He's become like a stalker who shows up at my doorstep every other Sunday. Some days he comes alone. Some days he brings his friends and family, they all chant and stamp... It's an angry little cottag e industry that seems to have sprung up around me. Like a bunch of keening god-squadders, they link hands to keep their courage up and egg each other on - Aunt Slushy the novelist who's hated me for years, Uncle Defence Ministry who loves big dams, Little Miss Muffet who thinks I should watch my mouth. Actually, I've grown quite fond of them and I'll miss them when they're gone. It's funny, when I wrote The God of Small Things, I was attacked by the Left - when I wrote The End of Imagination, by the Right. Now I'm accused by Guha and his Ra-Ra club of being - simultaneously - extreme left, extreme right, extreme green, RSS, Swadeshi Jagran Manch and by some devilish sleight of hand, on Guha's side too! Goodness, he's skidding on hi s own tail!

I don't know what it is with me and these academics-cum-cricket statisticians - Guha's the third one that I seem to have sent into an incensed orbit. In the name of supporting the cause of the tribal masses some of our intellectuals have become pathetic apologists of the murderous gangs who pass for revolutionaries! The Maoists are definitely leading the unwary tribes to the altar of State Repression just the same way as the LTTE Supremo had done in the case of the SriLankan Tamils.
Why not these writers and scholars advise the Center and other State Governments to emulate the CPIM-led LF GOVTs in Tripura, and to some extent in WB, in ameliorating the condition of the tribes?
The fascist RSS and its political outfit, BJP, SHALL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MESS IN WHICH Chattisgar and Jharkand, THOSE two TINY STATES, FIND THEMSELVES IN TODAY.No governance but political acrobatics has become the order of the day there!Samikkannuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08526686162910671871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13437119.post-10115093126036908972010-05-19T19:11:09.523+05:302010-05-19T19:11:09.523+05:30your buildup leading us to read Jyotirmaya's c...your buildup leading us to read Jyotirmaya's criticism of Roy's article reminded me of the following couplet from Ghalib:

thee khabar garm key ghalib key urreingay purzey;
dekhney hum bhi gayey thhe pa tamasha na hua

Jyotirmaya comes out as a poet writing in bad taste as compared to Arundhati Roy:

hein aur bhi duniya mein sukhanwar bahut acchey;
suntey hein ki ghalib ka hai andaaz-e-bayan aurAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13437119.post-85497054799267538832010-05-10T19:43:06.688+05:302010-05-10T19:43:06.688+05:30You might find this article interesting:'Despi...You might find this article interesting:'Despite its lack of nuance and its errors of judgement, Arundhati’s essay served a purpose. You have to hand to the lefties to come up with thousands of words of verbal diarrhea that means nothing in the end. All with the I-am-so-morally-superior fake-intellectual stance.

There was a time when various shades of lefties were all part of one big parivar. Each one defends the others rapes, mass murders, eye-gougings, bomb blasts and treacheries. Even now, one camp calls the others as 'our boys', 'comrades' and so on...

But then there is a gangland war, like it happens with Mumbai or Chicago underworld and the fake intellectual cabal is caught in between two warring camps, not sure which one to defend or support. The yellow media too is reluctant to write off one while supporting the other knowing one day the happy days of mutual understanding will be back...

In the meantime, we see such intellectual warfare, taking pot shots at each other, tamasha for the audience.

Of course, all the while rapes, murders and other horrible crimes against humanity in the name of the poor tribals will go on, defended, camoflagued, explained away and spun away, ably, by the white washers (or should I say red-washers) and mass murderer puppets in civil society.

It is yet another matter that the ideology itself is now found in the septic tank of history, flushed away by the paymasters of these murderers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
