While most of the other articles have tagged this watershed event as a win-win situation for India, people forget that the Americans have never given an inch without a penny. Here the most conspicuous reason for their prompt redressal of Indian grievances is, as you rightly mentioned, using India as a bulwark against China. India should keep in mind that the sheer, so-called benevolence of Bush should not deter them from pursuing peaceful and lucrative bilateral relations with China. This might be another manifestation of a divide-and-rule policy by the US following the astronomical growth of the the two countries and also the recent thaw in Sino-Indian relationship.Rohit Prateekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16588401422767888715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13437119.post-1122897196875650142005-08-01T17:23:00.000+05:302005-08-01T17:23:00.000+05:30A peaceful cooperation between India and China to ...A peaceful cooperation between India and China to contain US expansionism (and to lessen US grip on global energy resources) is not only of the biggest interest for the peoples of India or of Asia, but also for the peoples of Europe. We in Europe need desperately an alternative for the unipolar world, for the dangerous neoliberal and neoconservative icey storm which it generated. That threatening climate ruins our social systems and costs lives of our young people that are forced to fight in e.g. Afghanistan and Iraq, which provokes barbarous bombs in our cities. We need a multipolar world for a peaceful, sustainable international economic development, because development in poor countries is also good for general economic growth and for international stability. Therefor I hope that the peoples of India will press their government to cut off the enslaving nuclear rope between India and the US and replace it with cooperation with China, Iran and Russia as a kernel for peaceful cooperation with Europe and the rest of the world. This also could help pressing the US government to stop their boycotting the NPT process towards nuclear disarmament.
Klaas E. Anthony Wayne told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington on Tuesday.

"Both Chinese and Indian firms have reportedly been involved in oil and gas-sector deals in Iran that raise concerns under US law and policy," he said.

"For example, Indian and Pakistani officials are engaged in detailed discussions on the technical, financial and legal aspects of building a $4 billion pipeline that would bring Iranian natural gas to Pakistan and India, a project that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said also raises US concerns," Wayne said.

The deals with Iran and Sudan "can undermine efforts to encourage policy changes that will reduce global instability and energy security for all".

"Industry analysts have noted that in their rush to stake claims around the world, Chinese national oil companies have accepted terms that would often not be considered commercially viable for major Western oil companies," he said.

"India, and to a much larger extent China, have significant upstream investments in Sudan's energy sector. Additional sources of oil and gas on the world market are, of course, welcome, and for over two decades US international energy policy has promoted the reduction of barriers to energy and trade investment around the world as a means to enhance global energy security," he said.

However, the economic support such investment provides to regimes such as Iran and Sudan can undermine efforts to encourage policy changes that will reduce global instability and enhance energy security for all, he added.
(Source : Press Trust of India)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13437119.post-1122621986096615572005-07-29T12:56:00.000+05:302005-07-29T12:56:00.000+05:30This analysis has cleared up a lot of issues as fa...This analysis has cleared up a lot of issues as far as the bigger picture is concerned but I am also wondering what this means for India's nuclear power industry. Global warming and our lack of renweable energy resources means we have to move towards more nuclear power stations and we need the investment from wherever we can get it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
